Actually, it doesn't surprise me one bit that you read a lot, Rock, but it does surprise me that you're not more of a Kubrick fan. I expect more from the Shogun Assassin! Kubs slant on humanity, his dark, overwhelming take on our sick souls is something I'd have guessed would have endeared him more to you. Don't tell me you've never wanted to put on a Beethoven suit, walk through a mall like you've owned the place and pick up some young devotchkas that were licking popsicles. No matter how fluid my tastes might be or become in my lifetime A Clockwork Orange is and always will be my favorite movie ever, my desert island movie, as much for sentimental reasons as for my great apprciation for phenomonal filmmaking. If you have a problem with that I'd have to say, "Come and get one in the yarbles, if you have any yarbles, you eunuch jelly thou!"

If you haven't seen Paths of Glory and The Killing, do. If you have seen them and didn't like them I'll be dumbfounded. Cerebral filmfans, usually the ones with weak stomachs, will often put Barry Lyndon at the top of their Kub lists because of how it was shot, because all of these scenes look like fine paintings. I liked it but not as much as 2001, Strangelove, The Shining, lolita and Full Metal Jacket. Yes, I might say Eyes Wide Shut was lesser Kubrick but I definitely didn't think it was boring and I'd never say it was pretentious. That word and the name Stanley Kubrick just don't go together.

I hated the Fountain and probably won't be giving it another chance in the near future. Now that was a pretentious movie if I;ve ever seen one and i'd has such high hopes for Arronofsky after the brilliant, sickening Requiem. Boyle took the wrong path too, trying way too hard to do the consummate, grondbreaking sci-fi film of his generation with Sunshine. they both failed miserably and both movies reeked too much of kubrick envy. They were not the 2001 of today. On a happier note they're both supposed to have redeemed themselves with releases this year of The Wrestler and Slumdog Millionaire.

Love Lynch. love his movies with the exception, like you, of Inland Empire. Love any interview I've seen with him and have yet to see a Twin peaks episode or Dumbland.

How 'bout you with Peckinpah? I think I'll have to take you off of my friends list if you're not much of a Kubrick fan or a peckinpah fan either. For gritty, badass, brilliant, angry cinema Sam's the man. I'm guessing you've seen The Wild Bunch and Straw Dogs. Cross of iron, the getaway and bring me the Head of Alfredo Garcia would all be up your alley too. I'm looking to get my hands on his western boxset. Bloody sam's the man!

Oh, and I like Barbarian Invasions. Forgot about that one. I've had it listed here for awhile because it has rental stickers on it.

Are you much of a reader, Rock? If you are I'd like to recommend Robert Kolker's A Cinema of Loneliness, Easy Riders, Raging Bulls by Pete Biskind and Citizen Welles by Frank Brady.
The first is a book on theory that covers and looks at and compares the works of directors I'm certain you like and maybe one or two you might not know much about (but, in all likelihood, after reading this book, you'll want to seek out some of their movies.) I'd bet 10-1 you've seen (andenjoyed?) Kubrick, Spielberg, Scorsese and Oliver Stone's films. Arthur Penn and Robert Altman maybe not so much.
Easy Riders, Raging Bulls, as the title suggests, charts the history of the New Hollywood post-studio system between 1969 and 1980. It's very thorough and enlightening if not a little sensational.
If you're keen on classic cinema I'd say say your best bet is getting a biograpghy on one of the all time great directors and go from there. Orson Welles would be my own personal choice to start at. You could choose a bio. on John Ford, Howard Hawks, Charlie Chaplin, Alfred Hitchcock, Fritz Lang. etc, that'll provide you with a goldmine of movies to look out for and and give you an inspiring, interesting read ta boot.
Head to your local library, used book store or Goodwill and take a look around. You're bound to find a few gems. I'd gladly lend you a book or two but the cost to ship in Canada is criminal.

Cronenberg's not one of my favorite director's but he's my favorite Canadian director. There's not much to be said for the Canadian filmindustry compared to say Europe andThe States. Bob Clark and DC are cool. I've heard some good things about Guy Maddin and I might tell the ladies to go see an Atom Egoyan picture.. he's not my cup of tea. I might see Passchendaele when it's out on dvd and the only Canadian releases I can think of off the top of my head that i might buy if i see them at a discount would be Nanookof the North, Mon Oncle Antoine and Brand Upon the Brain! nut only because they're part of the Criterion Col. I don't tend to base my moviegoing on nationhood. Maybe I'm not much of a patriot. Who knows.

I believe strongly in personal responsibility, in the idea that you should follow through on the obligations you've committed yourself too and that this is a big judge of character. You've done what you can and if you say he's trustworthy I believe you. I'm not going to hound the guy over a dvd. It will be up to him to send it when he can or if he doesn't, to explain why he couldn't.

I snagged a copy of Sheitan on the cheap yesterday. It had been on my radar for awhile and after you recommended it (didn't you?) I figured I'd give it a go. Haven't watched it yet though.
Btw, Lurking Fear is out on dvd in the priceyFull Moon Classics, Vol. 2 set. I figured I'd be a prick and point this out. lol.

Hey mr. clean how ya doin today . I just wanted to give you the heads up that I will be leaving you a neutral rating for Frogs . The dvd was pretty scuff up , now sice it was at 9sb I wasnt expecting it to be spotless but i was expecting it to play without a glitch.
On the widescreen side at the 45min mark were Micheal gets attack by spiders , the image jams and goes black .I had to continue the film on the fullscreen side . Now since this was only 9sb , I dont feel like paying 2$ to ship it back and I dont wanta fill in a support ticket for it since i do enjoy the film and that theres a possibility that the first 45min on the fullscreen plays without a glitch . ill just pay to fix it since i prefer widescreen. Hope there no hard feelings.

Palindromes was an adequate enough compliment to Welcome to the Dollhouse that I'm tempted to watch the latter again in the near future.
My one complaint about the Sunshine farm part wouldn't be that the kids weren't bad off enough but that it was overlong. It feels like there was supposed to be another part to this movie that might have been cut or never developed for whatever reason (maybe with the girl who didn't have a speaking part?) and that Solondz compensated for this by stretching the other one out. he probably could have accomplished showing their hypocrisy in abouthalf the time.
The trucker was the way he was deliberately to show that he had the same emotional maturity and was as impressionable as a 13yr old. Sadly, yes, there are a lot of people like him out there.
I liked TS's idea to use 8 actresses for the one girl. It's a keen insight for him to see that girls of that age are indeed complex and might struggle through eight different identities in a year. It worked as far as I'm concerned.
Ellen Burstyn was great and I liked Lea Thompson too however short her part was. You have to admire any actor for taking the risk of working with TS's subject matter, let alone doing a good job with it.
He's slated to start working on a new movie shortly that Paul Reubens might be in. Now that's a guy that's gotta worry about being exploited for self-parody!

Hey bud how ya doin . heres a link for the SPASM festival that happen in montreal this time of year , I havent been to it yet but have been following it`s progress for over 3 years now and own one of their dvd( horror shorts vol1) . spasm is a small festival that showcase mostly independant horror and sci-fi shorts but it branchs in every other genreyoueven animation , different days different themes. Their all made byindie directors from the province of Quebec id say the stuff is 65% french 35$ englisg but some stuff is subtitled in englishand in french. and suprisingly has the years go by theres more seasoned actors in the indie shorts. But this year there is also 3 full lenght film .
Cul-de-sac looks fucking entertaining check out the trailer , fyi that old dude youll see is a really respected season actor that has been in mainstream stuff for so fucking long .
Also be on a real look out for End of the line ( check the trailer ) mow this one has been all over the place ( even the film festival in toronto) and has won lots of prizes . now this one has a small controversy sorrounding it over here , mostly byindie french directors that were part of the spasmfestival since the begining , their kinda piss at the director MauriceDeveraux ( he was aprt of the first year and one a prize) that he dint do his film in french . They say that it would of help a lot ourfull lenght horror industry ( i think there has only been 2 and they fucking suck) and would of help them to get finances for their film, am kinda on their side cuz ive been dying to see a real goodmostly french canadian language film and this one looks fucking good , ah well

I gotta say this wasnt the film i was expecting at all , I was really expecting the Transformers20th anniversary edition of the animatedshow , in your noites you did say it was a 2 disc edition but you dint say that the case transforms and that it's the live action flick. But luck would have it , that i was also looking hard for this edition and i couldnt find that specific edition here. Also if you evr mailed a wierd case like this put some kleenex in the box , the box is a bit wreck on top , but i really dont mind . Again really suprise that it was the megatron case i was looking for , and not the animated flick , i was in the mood for some nostalgia but this will do also

Honnestly I think this early election is complete bullcrap , I understand completly why theres a group went and did complain to the supreme court saying this was illegal and that it breaks a couple of rights. i was really piss at Harper he always said he was against politician who do that , and he goes and do that. Yep if you dont order Dobermann from a store it's pretty hard to find . I had ordered a long time ago the vhs from hmv(25$), the small quebec born distributuing company is Equinox , they did the vhs and they also distrube the dvd. I was really lucky to stumble upon it in a used store like 3 years ago in mint condition for 12$ , and i sold the vhs tape for 15 bucks . Hmv has it , you have to order it (well they donthold it at any of the 4 hmv stores near i live)but they have it , on the web site they list it at 39.99 . on amazon there 4 copy but none are the 2 disc edition i own and they all sell $$$ , cant find it at Archambault , but there Renaud-bray that i think holds it but at the moment i cant seem to be able to access there web page . Ill get back to you on that one , truly a must own , in the mean while look for another film by Yan Kouen with Cassel this one is a western shot in the states with a buch of u.s actors Renegade aka Blueberry , pretty darn good in my book , kinda remeniscent of old westerns in a way.

I was suprise to see that you dint like The brave one . I strongly felt that it was one of the most plausible vigilante flick ive ever saw , i could easyly indentified with Fosters character even if shes female . i read your comment on Death snetence ( Bul review) , i totally understasnd your point , the first time i watch it i was really disapointed that it wasnt more like Death wish , and really wanst sure what i thought about it. But after a second watch my feeling about it changed and i really liked it , specially score and acting wise . and i happen to really like that finale showdown

Dobermann : fucking cool and violent heist/criminal flick , with Vincent Cassel and a bunch of really talented actors
The last horror movie : if you get into this flick i would be really suprise if you dont praise it.
